H. Addington Bruce wrote at the height of psychical research, when serious people were trying to settle by investigation whether anything survived death. His subject is the classic cases: the possessed nuns of Loudun, the drumming at Tedworth, the noises in the Wesley parsonage, the Cock Lane ghost, the seeress of Prevorst, and the medium D. D. Home.

Bruce is a sceptic of a particular kind — unwilling to dismiss the reports unexamined, and equally unwilling to accept them. Half the book is really about the ghost hunters: what they looked for, what they proved, and how much fraud they turned up.
