Bar-Bells, or French Dumb-Bells
The bar-bells are so called because the dumb-bells are connected by a bar. Exercise I.--When you have picked up the bar properly, viz., by stooping without bending the knee--you can commence by grasping the bar in the centre and raising and lowering it above the head. Then with both hands. Repeat. Exercise II. Grasp with both hands and raise as before, then bring it down with elbows bent, knuckles outward to just below the chin. Exercise III. Grasp the bar and then let your hands run along it to near the bells. Extend arms over head; drop bar behind the back and recover position. (Lower the bar as far as possible behind the back in this exercise). Exercise IV. Advance the right foot and grasp the bar half-way between centre and bells. Lower right bell and elevate left, thus describing nearly a circle in the air. Pass bar over head and back again after retiring the right foot. The reverse of first movement.
There are other motions which will occur to the pupil. We can only direct him. Practice is necessary, and mind begin gently; it is better far.
