to offe: incense. The earth swallowed up some, and "fire from the Lord consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense" (Numb. xvi. 31-35).
Uzzah irreverently put forth his hand and touched the aik when the oxen shook it. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error, and there he died by the ark of God (2 Sam. vi. 6).
Eutychus, a young man attending the preaching of Paul, fell into a deep sleep. IIe sunk down with sleep, and "fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead" (Acts xx. 9). These are some of the solemn warnings against indifference and irreverence towards holy things and persons; and there are others which may be searched out.
